Avoiding Counterfeit Auto Parts in the Marketplace

Are you looking at purchasing new or used auto parts for your vehicle? Whether you are restoring a vintage hot rod or you want to do a little DIY maintenance on your modern sedan, it’s important to use the right parts for the job. Unfortunately, counterfeit used auto parts are all too common in Florida. And using counterfeit parts will actually cost you more money in the long run. So what can you do to ensure you get the right auto parts? Here are a few tips to help you select, identify, and use only genuine parts.

1. When looking for parts at a store, online, or salvage yard in Florida, the first thing you should do is check and see if the parts in question are factory certified. Whatever type of vehicle you drive, there are going to be official certified parts produced by the vehicle’s manufacturer. These parts usually carry seals, stamps, or emblems from the manufacturer proving their authenticity. When purchasing new, make sure the part or box is unopened and not tampered with. In the case of used parts, ensure the part matches what’s on the box.

2. When buying used parts online, there are a few safety measures you should take care of. First, make sure you see pictures of the part (or parts) you wish to purchase. Ask the seller to take pictures of any serial, part, and model numbers on the actual parts as well. Second, request any documentation or history if you are buying a large part (such as an engine) to ensure it has been properly maintained. And third, don’t purchase anything that does not have a return policy or guarantee if indeed you find the part is incorrect.

3. One final thing to note is that new parts are not necessarily more likely to be legitimate. Many counterfeit parts will actually claim to be new and sold as such. A good way to check for authenticity is to compare part or package images to the actual part you are interested in. If there are any problems, the parts will probably be fake.

It’s important to use real parts in your vehicle. Not only will they fit better and last longer but most come with guarantees and warranties that counterfeits simply won’t.
